WordPress 101
Learn how to manage web content using WordPress, a popular open-source content management system that powers over one-quarter of the websites on the Internet. This workshop reviews the major elements of a WordPress website and the options you have to get started on the platform.
Intro to HTML
HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language, is the language that builds the “skeleton” of a web page. This workshop reviews basic HTML structure — including how to write HTML to create webpages; fill them accordingly with headers, paragraphs, lists, links, images; and add customizations and classes to your code.
Intro to CSS
This workshop guides you through Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a programming language that is the backbone of many websites. You’ll learn how styles and stylesheets work, the basic syntax of CSS, and how to use CSS selectors, class and ID values, groups, and properties to customize a website.
CSS: Transforms, Transitions, and Animation Basics
This workshop, designed for folks with a working knowledge of CSS, explores the fundamentals of CSS transforms, transitions, and animation. Learn the basic building blocks that make up these capabilities, the difference between a transition and a transform, what browser support looks like, and — most importantly — how you can put these tools to use in your next project. This training also includes resources for learning more.
CSS: Flexbox
The flexible box layout model, now a dominant method of creating layouts using CSS. This workshop introduces the flexbox model, explains the “physics” logic of how elements interact when using flexbox, offers you a rubric for when to consider using flexbox in your projects versus grid or old-school floats, and addresses “gotcha’s” and common issues you may encounter in implementing flexbox.
Intro to Sass
Learn how to get started with Sass (Syntactically Awesome StyleSheets), the dominant CSS extension and preprocessor used by front end developers that can make your code more elegant and your development process more efficient. This workshop will help ease the transition to using a preprocessor — reviewing considerations regarding Sass, how to set up a WordPress theme that integrates it, and the basics of variables, mixins, nesting and partials. This training also includes resources for learning more.
Digital Security: Preventing Doxxing, Hacking, and Spying
This workshop reviews how you can keep yourself safe online and protect your personal and financial information. You’ll learn how to remove your personal information from the Internet, obscure your information if you own domains and websites, check in on your social media privacy settings, manage passwords, optimize your security practices, and take control of your online presence. We’ll also review what to do if you are doxxed — and make you Google yourself to see what you find. (Buckle up!)
