Building a Modern Platform for the World’s Oldest Feminist Magazine

The Scope

The Bethink team has a two-decade connection to Ms. Magazine, the feminist magazine founded in 1972 by Gloria Steinem. Ms., the oldest feminist magazine in the world to be in continuous print, reaches 168,000 readers in print and more than 2.8 million users online each year.

Innovations

Courtney built the original Ms. Magazine website on Moveable Type before moving it to WordPress during her time at as the IT Director at Feminist Majority Foundation — and Beth led a redesign of the Ms. website in 2017 that transformed what was possible on the front-end for writers and editors in a fast-moving political climate. 

Complex Build

We launched a fully updated Gutenberg site with multiple complex integrations and customized plugins for SEO, commerce, advertising, and spam reduction — and continue to develop immersive and interactive campaign-specific landing pages as needed.

Data Migration

We moved and updated over 10 years of editorial and site content, hundreds of user profiles, and a massive database of image files in order to modernize the website and move it to Gutenberg.

Increased Functionality

We streamlined the content management and expanded podcasting capabilities, all of which is fully integrated into the main WordPress dashboard.

Commerce

We developed a fully modernized storefront to connect to the website that can be managed independently by the extended Ms. team.

Support and Security

We have long overseen hosting and web security for Ms. We troubleshoot page load issues, mitigate any immediate threats, and have built protective safeguards into the website.

Bethink has been Ms. Magazine’s go-to web support firm for a decade. We continue to work closely with the team to maximize functionality as needed for the staff and to offer full editing capabilities.

Ms. Magazine now has some of the most successful and highly-rated podcasts in the market, and an increased capacity to feature and spotlight content in line with the news cycle on their website. Their pageviews are up, their load time is down, and their content output is at an all-time high due in large part to the platform we’ve built that streamlines their editorial processes.
